Residential highrise buildings of Onitsha
They are everywhere, 6, 7 storeys high and filled with human occupants. This city is running out of lands and people are just building "up" to beat the scarcity. It makes for a chaotic living standard as sanitation and parking/recreational spaces are sacrificed for more residential buildings. Welcome to Onitsha, the city on the Niger!

One of the big problems of Onitsha is complete lack of government presence. A tiny bridge over Nkisi river behind these building will open up a vast virgin territory. All they need to do is build 2 or 3 bridges over the Nkisi river and open up the massive land behind these buildings. Nobody want to build a bridge over that stream and thus everyone is concentrating in building in an already built up zone.
ReplyDeleteReally? I will go there and see Nkisi one day, maybe I can help remind them of this potential.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Nkpor, so i know the area very well. If they built something like the Twin Zik avenue bridge over that Nkisi stream, it will open up the virgin areas behind. But nobody is interested in doing such. You will ask yourself why the madness to build on the congested expressway area, while the area behind the tiny Nkisi stream is completely empty forest, just because the no access road to the area and the tiny path is so bad. The Anambra state government's unplanned approach to Onitsha development has been a major factor in the city not reaching it's true potential.
