A look at some internal doors we use in Nigerian home buildings

Lets talk doors, we are going to look at internal doors for rooms and bathroom/toilet areas. Internal doors are meant for shutting off rooms, not necessarily for strict security purposes in the Nigerian environment. I am saying this so we can rule out the issue of some classes of doors like strict security doors as might be required in the entrance/exits of homes. In Nigeria, we look at internal doors as doors meant to shut off rooms and other sections of the homes as deemed appropriate by the designers of the house. In most cases these doors could be fitted with locks, or latches. There is also the need to have handles to these doors. There are two major types of internal doors, the wooden doors and the metal doors. LOCAL WOODEN DOORS Local wooden doors are those types of doors made in Nigeria, with untreated Nigerian wood, using hand held tools mostly. These doors come in various shapes and forms, they include the panel doors and the flush doors, these doors has been widely in use and come without painting or any type of elaborate finishes. The makers of local doors don’t usually fit keys or handles to them. The home owner will most likely need to go out and buy door frames, handles, keys, hinges, staples and bolts. This might be inconvenient for some people; the total package for a well made single local door might be up to N15,000.00 FOREIGN WOODEN DOORS There are landlords who might be uncomfortable with the quality of finish and the local look of the locally made Nigerian doors. Which will make them explore the market in search of other types of doors, some importers keyed into this need and started bringing in some finished doors made of wood, with or without frames into the country. We now have foreign wooden doors in most markets. Some of these foreign doors come with frames, or architraves, while some don’t. Fitting foreign wooden doors to a building tends to give it an improved look, since the quality of finish is a bit higher. Prices for foreign wooden doors might be a little higher than their local counterparts, some are sold for N13,000 (without frames) or as high as N31,000 (with frames or architraves) . As a personal advice, i will ask anyone who wishes to use foreign wooden doors to also go for the frames, as fitting them with local frames will still defeat the main purpose, the improved look. OTHER FOREIGN DOORS FOR ROOMS There are some other types of doors for rooms, I have seen doors made of aluminium, some made of other forms of sheet metal, but the ones I am talking about now are the metal internal doors. These have the advantage of a neat look, being imported. There are also easier to buy and fix, as they have the complete pack (frame, hinges, keys and handles). They also enjoy the advantage of a choice in colours, there are the pitch black, the white, the chocolate brown or the wood grain designs available. The average cost for a complete foreign metal door is about N28,000 in the Nigerian markets.
