A comparison between Owerri and Port Harcourt pedestrian bridges
Due to the frequency of motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians, there is the need for governments across the world to build pedestrian foot bridges at intervals on busy roads, especially in cities. Statistics are not available at this moment but it's estimated that hundreds of people die every year while trying to walk or run across motor roads.
The importance of footbridges cannot be overemphasised, rather we are going to examine the apathy of the population of some cities from using pedestrian bridges even when they have been provided. An example is in Imo state, Nigeria, where people are refusing to climb and walk across the pedestrian bridges provided by the state government. I have observed that very few people use footbridges in Owerri, rather people take unneeded risks running across roads. Maybe it's with the design of the bridges, which looks rather slippery to climb, as they have no steps, people generally avoid the bridges in Owerri.
It's a different story in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, where the footbridges provided are so well built that they have air conditioned tubes. This might be to attract pedestrians to use the bridge. This is commendable for the state government who enjoys a huge budget because of their oil revenue.
